Planning an Adults-Only Adventure Trip (19+): A Practical Guide

Canadian Adventure Charters plans its experiences for adults aged 19 and over. That is a deliberate choice. It lets us design days around adult fitness levels, longer outings, quieter settings and the kind of conversation that happens around a table after a big day outdoors. If you are pulling together a trip with friends, colleagues or a partner, here is how to plan it well.
Why 19+?
Nineteen is the age of majority in Newfoundland and Labrador. Planning for adults means every guest can make their own decisions about risk, sign their own forms and take part fully in every activity. It also sets a clear expectation for everyone in the group: this is a grown-up trip, at a grown-up pace. When you send us a request, we will ask you to confirm that everyone travelling is 19 or older.
Start with the "why"
Before you look at dates, ask the group what they actually want from the trip. The answers usually fall into a few camps:
- Wildlife and scenery: icebergs, whales, seabirds and dramatic coastline.
- Challenge: longer hikes, paddling, skill-building and time in remote places.
- Recovery: slower days, nature-based wellness and time away from screens.
- Curiosity: ocean technology, history and learning from experts.
Most groups want a mix. Knowing which matters most helps us suggest the right shape of trip, and it avoids the classic problem of one person wanting a rest while another wants a summit.
Be honest about fitness and comfort
Adventure travel in the North Atlantic is active. Boarding small boats, walking on uneven ground and standing on deck in the wind all take some effort. Share any mobility limits, health considerations or anxieties (seasickness, heights, cold) early. We would much rather tailor a day than have someone struggle through it. You never have to share more than you are comfortable with, but the more we know, the better we can plan.
Pick your season
Coastal Newfoundland changes a lot through the year. Late spring and early summer tend to be the best time for icebergs, mid-summer for whales and seabirds, and late summer into early autumn for settled weather and colour on the land. Shoulder seasons can bring quieter places and lower crowds, but also more weather variability. We cover this in more detail in our seasonal guide on this blog.
Build in flexibility
Weather sets the schedule on the ocean. The best trips have a little slack built in: a spare half-day, a sheltered alternative, or a flexible order of activities. If your group has hard deadlines like flights or meetings, tell us so we can plan around them. A trip that bends with the weather is a safer trip and, honestly, usually a better one.
Group size and roles
Small groups move faster, see more wildlife and are easier to keep comfortable. If you are organizing, consider naming one point of contact for the group so details do not get lost. Agree in advance on simple things like how the group will make decisions, quiet hours, and whether anyone wants some solo time.
Alcohol and good judgment
Adult trips can include a celebratory dinner, but on-water and outdoor activities require clear heads. Our rule of thumb is simple: no alcohol before or during any active part of the day. Safety briefings, lifejackets and guide instructions apply to everyone, every time.
What to sort out before you go
- Travel insurance that covers outdoor activities and trip interruption.
- Any medications in your carry-on, with a little extra in case of weather delays.
- Clothing suited to cold, wet and windy conditions (see our packing list post).
- Emergency contact details for each person.
- A clear sense of what is included and what is not, confirmed in writing before you travel.
A note on what is available
Some CAC experiences are running and some are still planned and subject to approvals, partners and seasons. When you get in touch, we will tell you plainly what is available for your dates and what is not yet. No surprises.
